Why a pre-booked taxi beats every other option on this route
We are not going to tell you that trains and coaches do not exist. They do. But they are not right for everyone on this route, and it is worth being honest about why.
There is no direct train from Southampton to Heathrow Airport. Getting there by rail means travelling to Southampton Central, taking a South Western Railway service to London Waterloo or a Cross Country service to Reading, then navigating the London Underground or Heathrow Express with your luggage. That is a minimum of two changes and the whole journey typically takes between 1 hour 55 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes longer than a direct taxi while requiring you to manage bags across multiple platforms and barriers.
National Express runs a coach between Southampton Coach Station and Heathrow Central Bus Station, which takes around 1 hour 55 minutes on a good day. The service is priced reasonably for one person, but if you are two or more with luggage, the combined ticket cost starts to close the gap with a fixed-price taxi that picks you up from your front door.
For 2–4 people, a private taxi from Southampton to Heathrow is often cheaper per person than trains once you factor in fares, tube transfers and time plus it’s door-to-door with no hassle carrying luggage.
A taxi’s real advantage has never been price alone. It is the fact that someone collects you at your door, loads your luggage and drives you all the way there while you sit in the back and think about your holiday.
Southampton cruise to Heathrow
Southampton is the UK’s busiest cruise port, operated by Associated British Ports (ABP). Every year over two million passengers pass through its five cruise terminals:
- Mayflower
- Ocean
- Horizon
- City
- Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Terminal.
Thousands of those passengers fly into Heathrow Airport first, then need a direct transfer to reach their ship.
If that is you, WAZER Taxis runs this exact route daily. We will meet you inside your Heathrow arrivals hall usually at the Costa Coffee meeting point if you are arriving at Terminal 5 or the designated meeting points at T2, T3, or T4 and drive you directly to the cruise terminal where your ship is berthed.
Here is what you need to know about each terminal before you travel:
Mayflower Cruise Terminal (Berth 106, Dock Gate 10, Western Docks): One of the oldest and most recently refurbished terminals, serving P&O Cruises and Cunard. Your driver will take the A33 into the Western Docks via Dock Gate 10.
Ocean Cruise Terminal (Berth 46–49, Dock Gate 4, Eastern Docks): Located at the confluence of the River Test and River Itchen. Access is through Dock Gate 4 via the A33. Your driver drops you at the terminal entrance.
City Cruise Terminal (Berth 101, Dock Gate 8/10, Western Docks): The closest terminal to Southampton city centre, roughly half a mile from Southampton Central station. Easy access via Herbert Walker Avenue.
Horizon Cruise Terminal (Berth 102, Western Docks): Southampton’s newest terminal, adjacent to the City terminal. Well signposted and straightforward to reach from the M27 approach.
QEII Cruise Terminal (Berth 38/39, Dock Gate 4, Eastern Docks): The largest terminal in the port and the furthest from the city centre. Access is through Dock Gate 4. No realistic public transport serves this terminal, which makes a pre-booked taxi from Heathrow the most practical option by a long way.
Let us know which cruise terminal you are heading to when you book and we take care of the navigation including knowing which dock gate is in use on the day.

The route — Southampton to Heathrow via M27, M3 and M25
The road distance from Southampton to Heathrow Airport is approximately 63 to 67 miles by road, depending on exactly where in Southampton your journey starts.
The standard route WAZER taxis drivers take is M27 eastbound from Southampton, picking up the M3 northbound at junction 4, continuing past Winchester and Basingstoke and joining the M25 at junction 12.
From there, we take the M25 clockwise roughly 16 miles to junction 14 for Heathrow Terminals 4 and 5 or continue to junction 15 and join the M4 for Terminals 2 and 3.
In light traffic typically anything before 6am or after 7pm on a weekday the journey runs in around 70 to 80 minutes. In normal daytime conditions expect 90 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes.
The M3 itself is a well-maintained dual carriageway past Winchester and Basingstoke with no complicated navigation. The unpredictable part is always the M25. We monitor live traffic from the moment we leave Southampton and adjust on the road where needed.
When you book, let us know your flight departure time and we will suggest the right pickup time from your door. For short-haul European flights, we recommend leaving Southampton 2.5 hours before check-in closes. For long-haul international flights, allow 3 hours.
